    Schwinger-Dyson approach to non-equilibrium classical field theory

    In this paper we discuss a Schwinger-Dyson [SD] approach for determining the time evolution of the unequal time correlation functions of a non-equilibrium classical field theory, where the classical system is described by an initial density matrix at time t=0t=0. We focus on λϕ4\lambda \phi^4 field theory in 1+1 space time dimensions where we can perform exact numerical simulations by sampling an ensemble of initial conditions specified by the initial density matrix. We discuss two approaches. The first, the bare vertex approximation [BVA], is based on ignoring vertex corrections to the SD equations in the auxiliary field formalism relevant for 1/N expansions. The second approximation is a related approximation made to the SD equations of the original formulation in terms of ϕ\phi alone. We compare these SD approximations as well as a Hartree approximation with exact numerical simulations. We find that both approximations based on the SD equations yield good agreement with exact numerical simulations and cure the late time oscillation problem of the Hartree approximation. We also discuss the relationship between the quantum and classical SD equations.Comment: 36 pages, 5 figure

    La biodiversité dans les écosystèmes agricoles nous fournit la nourriture ainsi que les moyens de la produire. Les différentes variétés de plantes et d’animaux qui nous servent de nourriture sont des éléments indéniables de la biodiversité agricole. Moins visibles, mais tout aussi importants, sont les myriades d'organismes du sol, les pollinisateurs, et les ennemis naturels tels que les épidémies et les maladies, essentiellement utiles à la régulation qui renforce la production agricole. Ce livre examine ces différents aspects de la biodiversité agricole. Un certain nombre de chapitres examinent les ressourcesgénétiques des cultures et les ressources génétiques animales. Les autres chapitres portent sur la biodiversité aquatique, la diversité des pollinisateurs, et la biodiversité des sols. Trois chapitres traitent les différents aspects de la relation entre la diversité et la gestion des épidémies et des maladies. Les chapitres 12 et 13 concernent les agriculteurs et leur gestion de la diversité dans un contexte plus large en matière de complexité spatiale et de changements environnementaux et économiques. Le chapitre 14 se penche sur la contribution de la diversité au régime alimentaire, à la nutrition et à la santé humaine. Les chapitres 15 à 17 analysent la valeur des ressources génétiques et des services écologiques apportée par la biodi- versité dans les écosystèmes agricoles

    Out-of-equilibrium evolution of quantum fields in the hybrid model with quantum back reaction

    The hybrid model with a scalar "inflaton" field coupled to a "Higgs" field with a broken symmetry potential is one of the promising models for inflation and (p)reheating after inflation. We consider the nonequilibrium evolution of the quantum fields of this model with quantum back reaction in the Hartree approximation, in particular the transition of the Higgs field from the metastable "false vacuum" to the broken symmetry phase. We have performed the renormalization of the equations of motion, of the gap equations and of the energy density, using dimensional regularization. We study the influence of the back reaction on the evolution of the classical fields and of the quantum fluctuations. We observe that back reaction plays an important role over a wide range of parameters.     Affective Man-Machine Interface: Unveiling human emotions through biosignals

    As is known for centuries, humans exhibit an electrical profile. This profile is altered through various psychological and physiological processes, which can be measured through biosignals; e.g., electromyography (EMG) and electrodermal activity (EDA). These biosignals can reveal our emotions and, as such, can serve as an advanced man-machine interface (MMI) for empathic consumer products. However, such a MMI requires the correct classification of biosignals to emotion classes. This chapter starts with an introduction on biosignals for emotion detection. Next, a state-of-the-art review is presented on automatic emotion classification. Moreover, guidelines are presented for affective MMI. Subsequently, a research is presented that explores the use of EDA and three facial EMG signals to determine neutral, positive, negative, and mixed emotions, using recordings of 21 people. A range of techniques is tested, which resulted in a generic framework for automated emotion classification with up to 61.31% correct classification of the four emotion classes, without the need of personal profiles. Among various other directives for future research, the results emphasize the need for parallel processing of multiple biosignals

    The placental renin-angiotensin system and oxidative stress in pre-eclampsia

    There is an inverse correlation between human birthweight and umbilical venous angiotensin II (AngII) concentrations. Oxidative stress and increased pro-renin receptor (PRR) both enhance the cleavage of angiotensin I from angiotensinogen (AGT). Pre-eclampsia, a hypertensive disorder of pregnancy, manifests as high blood pressure and proteinuria, and is a state of increased oxidative stress. Objectives, study design and main outcome measures Hypothesis: Pre-eclampsia will be associated with increased placental expression of components of the renin–angiotensin system, which could result in reduced infant birthweight. Biopsies were taken 1 cm from the placental edge from 27 normotensive controls and 23 pre-eclamptic White European women. Immunohistochemistry was performed for AGT, PRR, glutathione peroxidase 3 (GPx3) and the AT1R and AT2R AngII receptors. Protein expression was semi-quantitatively assessed (H-score). Results: AT1R expression was significantly increased in pre-eclamptic placentae, and negatively correlated with birthweight (r = −0.529, P = 0.009). AT1R expression was also negatively correlated with GPx3 expression overall (r = −0.647; P = 0.005). AT2R expression positively correlated with AGT (r = 0.615, P = 0.002) in the pre-eclamptic placentae only. Conclusions: The raised AT1R expression in pre-eclampsia, together with inadequate antioxidant protection, possibly through lower GPx activity, might enhance the vasoconstrictor effect of locally-generated AngII, contributing to the restricted fetal growth characteristic of pre-eclampsia. Conversely, the AT2R:AGT association within the pre-eclamptic placenta may provide a compensatory mechanism

    Search for single top quarks in the tau+jets channel using 4.8 fb1^{-1} of ppˉp\bar{p} collision data

    We present the first direct search for single top quark production using tau leptons. The search is based on 4.8 fb1^{-1} of integrated luminosity collected in ppˉp\bar{p} collisions at s\sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We select events with a final state including an isolated tau lepton, missing transverse energy, two or three jets, one or two of them bb tagged. We use a multivariate technique to discriminate signal from background. The number of events observed in data in this final state is consistent with the signal plus background expectation. We set in the tau+jets channel an upper limit on the single top quark cross section of \TauLimObs pb at the 95% C.L. This measurement allows a gain of 4% in expected sensitivity for the observation of single top production when combining it with electron+jets and muon+jets channels already published by the D0 collaboration with 2.3 fb1^{-1} of data. We measure a combined cross section of \SuperCombineXSall pb, which is the most precise measurement to date.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figure

    Search for pair production of the scalar top quark in the electron-muon final state

    We report the result of a search for the pair production of the lightest supersymmetric partner of the top quark (t~1\tilde{t}_1) in ppˉp\bar{p} collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron collider corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb1^{-1}. The scalar top quarks are assumed to decay into a bb quark, a charged lepton, and a scalar neutrino (ν~\tilde{\nu}), and the search is performed in the electron plus muon final state. No significant excess of events above the standard model prediction is detected, and improved exclusion limits at the 95% C.L. are set in the the (Mt~1M_{\tilde{t}_1},Mν~M_{\tilde{\nu}}) mass plane

    Measurement of the dijet invariant mass cross section in proton anti-proton collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV

    The inclusive dijet production double differential cross section as a function of the dijet invariant mass and of the largest absolute rapidity of the two jets with the largest transverse momentum in an event is measured in proton anti-proton collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV using 0.7 fb^{-1} integrated luminosity collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The measurement is performed in six rapidity regions up to a maximum rapidity of 2.4.
